Tips on Playing Shekere by Jim Greiner

In this lesson Jim Greiner discusses how-to play shekere. Traditionally shekeres are made from gourd, the LP Pro Shekere is made from fiberglass which prevents it from breaking. To play start off by placing the "meaty" part of your dominant hand at the bottom curve of the instrument. Your fingers can be above or below the beads.Your non-dominant hand holds the neck of the shekere, grasp it lightly and do not lift with this hand. Push from the wrist of the bottom hand, drop your shoulders and resist the shekere with your non-dominant hand so that it doesn't fly our of your grasp. This relax and drop technique will help you find a nice flow.

Jim Greiner is an LP artist and clinician who is featured on LP's video, Community Drumming For Health & Happiness. He is also the percussionist with The Bill Hopkins Rockin' Orchestra, where he plays a wide range of musical styles at corporate parties and resorts around the world. Through his company, Hands-On! Drumming Events, Jim leads community-building drum circles and celebrations for corporations, conferences, and communities throughout North America.
