Percussionist
Bertone covers a wide range of musical turf - reggae R&B, funk,
Latin, and jazz. In his nearly twenty-year career he has performed
with many artists, including Tower of Power, Kenny G, Big Mountain,
Maynard Ferguson, Stanley Clarke, The Beach Boys, Steven Stills, and
Third World.
Bertone grew up with his parents listening to recordings of Tito
Puente,
Trini Lopez, and Vicki Carr, and dancing to the popular Latin rhythms
of the day. When he was eight, his mother gave him a pair of bongos;
his first conga was an LP wood model ("Very old, very beat up,
and very cool!" he recalls). Today Bertone's primary instruments
are congas and timbales. "I have always loved LP
gear because
of its overall durability and sound," he states.
Bertone's credits are impressive: he performs on the gold-selling
albums "Free Up" by reggae masters Big Mountain and "The
Wilsons" from The Wilsons (formerly Wilson-Phillips). He is also
very involved with the Beach Boys camp and has played on the band's
platinum-selling album "Stars and Stripes, Volume I," as
well as on Brian Wilson's solo release "Imagination." Also
playing on "Imagination" are Jimmy Buffet, Timothy S. Schmidt,
J.D. Souther, and others.
