Born
on August 11, 1972 in Holguin, Cuba, Mauricio Herrera started his musical
studies on violin at the tender age of seven. By the time he was a
young teenager he developed a deep love for percussion. During his
adolescence he studied performance and conducting, while simultaneously
playing in numerous popular and folkloric groups.
Upon graduation, Mauricio joined the faculty at the Escuela Vocacional
de Arte in Holguin. In 1994 he moved to Havana, where he performed
with top groups including Manolito Simonet,Paulo FG and Su Elite, Manolín
el Médico de la Salsa, Pachito Alonso, Sus Kini Kini, La Barriada
and Héctor Valentín.
In 2001 Herrera traveled to Mexico City where he recorded and performed
with Amaury Gutiérrez, David Torrens and Domingo Quinónez,
to name a few. Herrera moved to New York City in 2005 to fulfill a
longtime passion of developing a career in Jazz. Mauricio quickly integrated
into the NYC Jazz and Latin music community. Since his move to NYC
he has performed, recorded and toured with many top musicians including
Yerba Buena, Son de Madre, Yosvany Terry Afro-Cuban Roots, Osmany Paredes

Mauricio believes that his upbringing in Cuba gave him a fundamental
understanding and love for syncopation and the diversity of New York
City helps him manifest it. Currently Mauricio is on faculty at Boys
and Girls Harbor Conservatory in New York City where he takes great
pride in teaching Latin music’s future percussionists.
