Steven
Kroon has been a professional musician for the last 35 years. He was
born in Harlem and lived there until the age of nine, when his family
moved to St. Alban’s Queens. At the time, there were many
great Jazz and R&B artists living in Steven’s neighborhood,
such as Lester Young, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Count Basie
and the great producer Henry Glover. At home, he mostly listened to
his father’s records, including Tito
Puente, Tito Rodriguez and
Machito. And friends’ records exposed him to all of the great
Jazz artists. Soon after, Steven progressed to playing percussion,
and began studying with various music teachers. One of his greatest
influences was Tommy Lopez, Sr., whom he took conga lessons with, followed
by studies with percussionist Dom Um Romao.
Steven began working with such notables as Luther Van Dross (from
1981 to 2001), with whom he performed on seven platinum albums and
fifteen world tours (including two live video performances). He also
performed on such television shows as The Tonight Show, The
Late Show With David Letterman, and The Grammy Awards. Steven
also performed with Ron Carter from 1987 to 2004, which included extensive
tours of the U.S., Japan and Brazil, as well as the well-known NY Jazz
scene. He also recorded with a “Who’s Who” in the
recording business, such as Roberta Flack, Bill Cosby, Aretha Franklin,
and Diana Krall, just to name a few.
For the last five years, Steven has been working on his solo career,
which includes two two CD’s: “In
My Path,” and “Senor
Kroon,” (both of which will be reissued under Steven’s
own label “Kroonatune Records, LLC”). He recently
finished his third CD, “El
Mas Alla” (Beyond), on City
Hall Records.
At this point in Steven’s life, he has chosen to devote his
time and creativity to further his own career. And as always, “On
The One.”
