Fofi Lancha was born in Cuba and became mesmerized by the rhythms of the comparsa on the streets at an early age. After seeing the movie, “Rock Around The Clock, ” he decided to make drumming a life-long ambition and goal. In 1961, Fofi relocated to New York City, where his father took him to see Gene Krupa at the Metropole Café. By the next day he had his first set of drums.
Fofi studied for three years at Henry Adler Music School on 34th Street and also performed with writer/singer Valerie Simpson. He recorded his first single with a gospel soul group “Reflections”, on Scepter Records. He then relocated to Miami in 1972 and studied at Miami Dade Community College and also performed with Spanish artists such as Chirino, Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan (Miami Sound Machine), Jon Secada, and Tito Puente.
In the late 70’s Fofi recorded with “Max Damien” on RCA records. In the 90’s he played in a band “Tumbling Dice” with Bobby Keys & Mick Taylor of the “Rolling Stones” and recorded a CD with “KC and the Sunshine Band”. For the past 18 years, he has been the house drummer for the #1 Spanish Television Show “Sabado Gigante International” and the last 3 years with “Don Francisco Presents”, both on the Univision Network backing up artists such as Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Los Tigres del Norte, and many others.
