Jorge "Negrito" Trasante

Jorge 'Negrito' TrasanteJorge "Negrito" Trasante has played drumset with the Gipsy Kings for most of the band's ten year existence. His expertise can be heard on such Gipsy Kings classics as Viento del Arena and Baila Me, propelling and coloring the Gipsy Kings passionate acoustic sound.

At the age of five, "Negrito" began playing congas and Uraguayan folkloric drums. "Negrito's" first rhythmic influences came from the Candombe (Afro music of Uruguay), Tamboriles (folkloric drumming) and Murga (a folkloric rhythm from Uraguay that utilizes hands, bass drums, snare drums and cymbals played by different drummers). He lists his influences as his father, percussionist and trumpet player Valentin Trasante, percussionists Alfredo Ferreira and Huron Silvan, as well as other musicians well-known in his native country of Uruguay.

Jorge learned drumset and timbales later in his life, and his first LP instruments were a set of LP Tito Puente Timbales and a LP Afuche/Cabasa. "LP has always been my first choice as a professional, it's quality is unparalleled," he says. "Creating new and interesting sounds has allowed me to develop my own style, both live and in the studio."

Jorge "Negrito" Trasante can be heard on Creole Unit's Latitudes 30, Azuquita's Salsa International and a soon to be released recording by Sammy Goz. He is also featured on The Best of the Gipsy Kings, Nonesuch Records and will be touring with the Gipsy Kings throughout Europe and Asia.
