Recognized as the first conguero to integrate into the New York Jazz scene, Candido Camero recently was given a special 79th Birthday Tribute during a performance at New Jersey City University.
On stage that evening were the New Jersey City University Percussion Ensemble (under directed by Robert Romero), percussionist and LP player Changuito, trombonist Juan Pablo Torres, On Time and the Ridgewood HS Percussion Ensemble and The Holmes Family. The Holmes Family suprised Candido by singing a soulful rendition of "Happy Birthday." Candido joined in, adding a special touch to the performance.
Candido immigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1946. He has collaborated with such musical giants as Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Taylor, Tony Bennett and Tito Puente. Latin Percussion is proud to be a part of Candido's music.
Happy Birthday, Candido, and many more to come!
