Recording engineer, composer, percussionist and longtime LP artist Ralph MacDonald first started playing with Harry Belafonte in 1961. At that time, Belafonte’s music didn’t include any percussion, other than drums. Ralph often found himself without anything to do on stage. But Harry, being very opened-minded, approved Ralph’s incorporating congas, shakers, tambourines and triangles, which is now a staple in Belafonte’s music.
For the record, Ralph was one of the first players to use a percussion table. It was a wooden table and it was not easy to assemble. At a Belafonte concert, Martin Cohen saw Ralph using the wooden percussion table and came up with the idea of a collapsible and portable table. From that encounter, LP created the a href="../../Product_Showcase/Stands/lp_percussion_table.html">LP Percussion Table, an ideal workstation that is currently used by thousands of players worldwide.
Later in his career, Ralph played with Roberta Flack. Her pop sound really opened up Ralph’s mind and allowed him to incorporate all types of hand percussion her music.
Currently Ralph is playing with Jimmy Buffet. Jimmy’s music features many types of sounds, including Calypso, Caribbean, New Orleans Zydeco and South American music. Jimmy’s style of music and Ralph’s playing fuse perfectly together. Throughout the past years they have written many songs together.
