Three time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sanchez is considered by many writers, musicians and an increasing number of followers as one of the most prominent, versatile and sought after drummers of his generation.
Born and raised in Mexico City, he started playing drums at the age of five and began playing professionally early in his teens. He pursued a degree in classical piano at the National Conservatory in Mexico and in 1993 moved to Boston to enroll at Berklee College of Music from where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in Jazz Studies.
Antonio has performed with some of the biggest names in jazz including Pat Metheny (he has been the only drummer to hold both the chair for both the Pat Metheny Group and the Pat Metheny Trio with Christian McBride), Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton and Toots Thielmans.
Antonio has also performed or recorded with some of the most prominent musicians of the newer generation such as Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, David Sanchez, Paquito D'Rivera, Dianne Reeves, Kenny Werner, Marcus Roberts, Avishai Cohen, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jane Monheit, Miguel Zenon, Maria Schneider and the SF Jazz Collective among many more.
In 2007 he recorded his first solo effort entitled "Migration". The album includes a stellar cast of some of today's most sought after musicians: Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Chris Potter, David Sanchez and Scott Colley. It has gotten rave reviews from different publications all over the world. It is among the 100 best jazz records of 2007 according to "Downbeat" Magazine and among the 5 best debuts in "The Village Voice". His second CD, "Live in New York" was released in 2010 to rave reviews as well.
In 2009 he released his first instructional DVD for Hudson Music and was warmly received by the press and musicians all over the world. Antonio has performed clinics, drum festivals and master classes all over the world such as the Modern Drummer Festival Weekend, the Montreal Drum Festival, Zildjian Day Chile, The Percussive Arts Society International Convention and Yamaha Groove Night as well as countless Colleges, Conservatories and Universities across the globe.
He has been featured on the cover of several important music publications worldwide such as "Modern Drummer" (USA), "Percussioni" (Italy), "Drums and Percussion" (Germany), “Musico Pro” (USA), “Berklee Today” and “Music:Life” (Mexico). He has also appeared on the cover of Downbeat Magazine, the most prestigious jazz publication on two separate occasions alongside Pat Metheny and Christian McBride and the New Gary Burton Quartet.
Antonio currently resides in New York City.
