Dani Markham was born in Louisville, Kentucky, where she began playing percussion at the age of 8 in the Fabulous Leopard Percussionists (now known as the Louisville Leopard Percussionists), under the direction of Diane Downs. While in the Leopards, Dani performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention for several consecutive years, and in 2003, she took 2nd place in their International Marimba Festival. While at PASIC with the Louisville Leopards, Dani also performed along side Tony Royster, Jr. in the Percussive Marketing Council campaign to showcase young drum phenoms.
In 2005, Dani received a full-tuition scholarship to attend the University of Miami, studying under the direction of Dr. Ney Rosauro. While at the University of Miami, Dani was invited to play at the International Youth Asian Arts Festival in Kagoshima, Japan. She also attended the Chautauqua Music Festival in New York, where she expanded her skills in Brazilian, Latin, Rock, and Jazz performance.
Dani became a highly sought after percussionist and drummer in Miami and played with numerous bands spanning across several genres including soul, funk, pop and rock. She also continued to pursue her love for classical music, appearing with the New World Symphony in 2009. Her work also includes studio recording.
Recently Dani moved to the Bay Area of California and is currently touring throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Australia with the band Tune Yards. Dani takes on a multi-faceted roll in this band — playing an arsenal of drums and percussion while belting out intricate melodies over poly-rhythmic grooves.
