Hilko Schomerus was born in Hannover, Germany, in 1964. He began his autodidactic studies in percussion at the age 17. Numerous trips during his music studies took him to Venezuela, Indonesia, and West Africa (amongst other places), where he learned and collected musical instruments and culture of these countries. His openness and curiosity have kept Hilko traveling, trying to find and discover extraordinary traditional percussion instruments from all over the world. He spends most of his time trying to adapt these various styles into a unique combination that has become his own.
Hilko has toured on the national level with various top German acts such as Fury in the Slaughter House, Cultured Pearls, Inga Rumpf, Soul Lounge, Echt and NDR Big Band, just to name a few. He has also performed and/or recorded for many international acts including Richard Clayderman, Sandra (Enigma) and Lamont Dozier. He has toured worldwide with Randy Crawford, DJ Bobo, Cunnie Williams and Mousse T.
When Hilko is not traveling, touring or playing gigs, he teaches courses in Latin and Pop Percussion throughout Germany. He works regularly for the Hannover University for Music and Drama and the University of Music in Cologne and gives guest lectures at University for Music in Detmold, Bremen, Hamburg and Osnabrück. He has also presented various international seminars.
