Karl Van den Bossche

"LP is incredibly inventive. They're never too shy to try something new. The sounds, especially in the studio, are fabulous." - Karl Van den Bossche
Karl Van Den Bossche's career had a dubious start. At age 15, when his English mates were joining bands, he figured he had better learn an instrument fast if he wanted to be part of the scene. "I chose percussion because I thought it would be easy. I had no idea how much work it would be!" But the years of effort are paying off for the London-based percussionist/drummer, who toured last year with England's pioneers of acid-jazz, The Brand New Heavies. He is currently on the road with folk-soul singer Des'ree, and has performed with Robert Palmer, Maxwell, and Lighthouse Family as well. Van Den Bossche has also recorded with pop vocalist Ana Torroja (Puntos Cardinales), Basia (Basia on Broadway) and Sade (Best of Sade).
Early on, Van Den Bossche listened avidly to the jazz-funk sounds of England's Morrisey Mullen. He was later influenced by Dizzy Gillespie, Paulinho Da Costa, Weather Report, Sting and "the entire musical population of Latin America!" He began on bongos, and today plays congas, drums and assorted percussion. The first LP instrument Van Den Bossche acquired was an Afuche/Cabasa, his now-large collection includes a wide variety of LP instruments.
