Maria Martinez recently received a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ from the city of Los Angeles, stating, "Because of your sincere devotion to bring your music into the schools of this great city, we salute you. Your musical talent, your patience with elementary school children, your teaching skills, and your very animated musical delivery, were all big hits at Franklin Avenue Elementary School on February 23, 2012. What a show! You are an angel in the City of Angels."
Maria Martinez is originally from Camaguey, Cuba, and was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is a respected drummer, percussionist, clinician and educator. Martinez has performed with such artists as Maia Sharp, El Chicano, Rita Coolidge, Trini Lopez, Angela Bofill, Klymaxx, Emmanuel, Barry White, Nel Carter, Johnny Paycheck and Lisa Haley.
Currently Maria pursues an active freelance career performing and sharing both stage and studio with such artists as Maia Sharp, Sunnie Paxson, Andre Delano and Bobby Rodriguez amongst others.
In addition, she continues to conduct concerts, clinics, workshops, master classes and music camps across the country at major venues, both individually and with World Beat Rhythms. Maria has performed at PASIC, IAJE, NAMM, CMEA, TCAP and the Berklee School of Music World Percussion Festival among others.
Her television and recording appearances include The Jessica Simpson Christmas Show, Perfect Couples, The Late Show, The Drew Carey Show, Dukes of Hazzard, No Borders CD, Soul Train and many others.
Martinez is the author of several educational publications, including Brazilian Coordination for Drumset, Afro-Cuban Coordination for Drumset (DVD, book/CD packages) and Instant Guide to Drum Grooves, Rudimental Warm-Ups, (book/CD packages). World Beat Rhythms: Brazil, Africa, Cuba and USA book/CD packages are all published by Hal Leonard. In addition, Maria is the content editor for the Poncho Sanchez DVD entitled Fundamentals of Latin Music for the Rhythm Section published by CherryLane.
