Samuel Torres
Arturo Sandoval
Born in Bogota, Colombia, Samuel graduated in Music Composition from Universidad Javeriana of Bogota. He started playing at age twelve and recalls learning a great deal from in-home jam sessions with friends of his musically inclined grandparents and relatives. Samuel began playing professionally with numerous bands in Bogota at age 14.
Although a classically trained percussionist, Samuel was drawn by the sound and rhythms of Latin and jazz. In 1998 he traveled to the United States, where he was contracted with Grammy Award winner, Arturo Sandoval with whom he continues to tour throughout the world.
Samuel has played with renowned jazz artists including the late Tito Puente and Michael Brecker along with Chick Corea, Poncho Sanchez, Pete Escovedo, Dave Valentin, Don Byron and Claudio Roditi among others. Torres has also performed as a guest of the Florida International University. He also earned second place for his show-stopping performance at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competion for hand percussion.
